前几天，外交部华发言人对中澳关系又发表了高论，于是有了下面这段话：对此我很好奇：澳大利亚真的有这句谚语么？英文原文是什么样的呢？我就先谷歌了这句中文，居然得到了81万条结果，几乎都是中国官方引用的记录。除了最近的这条新闻，还有哪些呢？举几个例子：2018年：2017年：2016年：最早的是2014年：我没有找到比这更早的中文记录，也就是说，这可能就是这句“澳洲谚语”的出处。有意思的是，我在2017年找到了下面这条推特，作者是《纽约时报》澳籍驻华记者Chris Buckley，他有个中文名“储百亮”。很显然，这个澳洲人对这条“澳洲谚语”泛起了迷糊。同样表示“从没听说过的”还有：也有人表示，这是一条新西兰土著毛利人的谚语：于是，接下来我就搜了一下这条英文谚语，发现英语国家的网友对它的出处也是莫衷一是。除了说来自毛利人，还有说来自美国诗人惠特曼的，还有说来自身残志坚海伦凯勒的。对这句谚语的来历整理最全面的是quoteinvestigator.com，据这个网站的编辑详细考证，时间线大概是这样的（阅读原文可见）：1850年，英国诗人Charles Swain在他的诗作Youth and Age里有这样两句：
Thus, in the morn of life, our feetWould distant pathways find;The sun still face to face we meet—The shadow falls behind!But when the morn of life is o’er,And nature grows less kind;The length’ningshadow creeps before—The sunlight falls behind!
1862年，美国西弗吉尼亚州的一家报纸发表的“名言集锦”里有这么一句，没有标注作者：
Face the sunshine, and your shadow will fall behind you.
1873年，美国康乃狄克州第一任女部长Celia Burleigh在一篇文章中说了这样一句话：
Evil deeds cast long shadows, but if we keep our faces to the light,these shadows will fall behind, not before us.
1874年，英国报刊College Rhymes上发表了这样一句诗，作者是A. Merion：
All sunshine is my path in front, the shadows fall behind.
1885年，美国旧金山报刊The Sunday Chronicle发表了这样一句诗，没有标注作者：
Face the light and go forward, and the shadows will fall behind you.
1903年，美国肯萨斯一家报纸发表了这样一句诗，作者叫M. B. Whitman：
Keep your face always towards the sunshine, and the shadows willfall behind you.
1910年，美国伯克利报刊The Messenger发表了同样一句诗，作者就叫Whitman，没有名字：
Keep your face always towards the sunshine, and the shadows willfall behind you.
1919年，美国加州报刊The Newhall Signal发表了同样一句诗，直接说作者是大名鼎鼎的Walt Whitman：
Keep your face toward the sunshine and the shadows will fall behindyou.
1927年，美国宾州的一个专栏作家在文章中引用了这样一句诗，说作者是Helen Keller：
It was Helen Keller who wroteIn an autograph album,“Keep your face to the sunshineAnd you cannot see the shadow.”
之后，几乎所有网络记录都把这句诗归功于惠特曼和海伦凯勒。直到2013年，Reddit网络社区有人说了这样一段话：
Turn your face toward the sun and the shadows will fall behind you.(Maori Proverb)A friend said this and I spent the rest of the day thinking aboutit.经过这一番考证，我们的结论其实已经显而易见了：这句话最早是英国诗人创作的，他的原意是：人年轻时就像早晨，面朝太阳，背影留在身后；到了下半辈子就像午后，面朝阴影，太阳留在身后。但后来，这句诗在引用发表过程中鲁鱼亥豕，诞生了不同的版本，也有人错误地将作者当成了惠特曼和海伦凯勒。当然也不排除，新西兰毛利人流传过意思相近的“俗话说”。反正，肯定是没有澳大利亚什么事情。
